Operations Resume for Falcon 7X

In the late spring, a 7X experienced unexpected loss of control during a routine landing.  The crew did an amazing job regaining control of the aircraft; however, the issue was declared to dangerous and the Falcon 7X was grounded until further investigation.

The problem turned out to be a production defect in one of the electronic components – the Horizontal Stabilizer Electronic Control Unit.  As of June 16th, Dassault issued a modification and procedural protocol to resolve the issue.  All Falcon 7X models with the Horizontal Stabilizer Electronic Control Unit which have been switched out for the modified unit are considered airworthy and have or will resume flights soon!

Occurances such as this make you think twice about always wanting the latest/greatest.  I had the first revised version on the BMW 745 when they came out with the new gorgeous body style and the iDrive control that nobody could seem to figure out back then.  The 2002 model (like mine) was the first production year and it certainly had some bugs to iron out.  I used to tell BMW that their was a ghost in my iDrive because it would do some really bizarre things.  The same goes for anything new; especially something with a lot of electronics.  It seems like the more amazing the electronics are – the more amazing the the chance for some bugs to need to be worked out!  I, personally, learned my lesson about needing the latest/greatest with a machine that stays on the ground… NOT SURE I WANT TO BE IN THE AIR WHEN WE DISCOVER A BUG!

Commercial flights just get worse and worse!!!

What in the world is going on here?  I just saw a news report of a 95 year old, CANCER-STRICKEN, woman with tubes in her nose being forced to remove her adult diaper for TSA to pat her down?  She was traveling to Michigan to spend her last days with her family and this is  how she is treated… REALLY???  If that were my mother I would have been arrested for screaming at the top of my lungs; you know TSA will have you arrested for just about anything these days!

One of our employees flew commercial the other day and was unaware that even your first piece of checked luggage costs you $25.  Then the airline broke her bag.  She didn’t want to cause a stink, as the bag wasn’t brand new or anything but then when she was returning (departing from one of the smallest commercial airports in North America) she was told that she was too late to check her bag they broke.  The agent explained to her that she would’ve had to arrived 60 minutes prior to departure and it was currently 57 minutes prior to departure… YES SHE WAS 3 MINUTES LATE!  Again, this is an airport that has 1 flight out each day and we know very well that they could have checked her bag.  Again, she opted to not cause a stink.  She had to carry her bag around a larger airport where she changed aircraft but she still didn’t complain.  I think she should have – first you charge for the bag, then you break it and then refuse to check it because she is 3 minutes late and then she has to carry it around a huge international airport (when they broke the bag it stopped rolling) and then she can’t find an agent to make a claim on her bag so when she cannot lug it around looking for an agent any longer she finally resigns that she will have to fix her own bag!

OH! BUT LET ME GUESS – THE COMMERCIAL CARRIERS ARE RAISING THEIR PRICES AGAIN???

DID ANYONE HEAR ABOUT THE GAZILLIONS OF DOLLARS THE COMMERCIAL CARRIER MADE FROM CHARGING FOR BAGS LAST YEAR – YES! IT WAS IN THE BILLIONS!

WAIT!  SPIRIT AIRLINES IS GOING TO START CHARGING YOU TO PRINT YOUR BOARDING PASS FOR YOU –  YOU’D BETTER PRINT IT AT HOME.  I BELIEVE IT IS ALSO SPIRIT WHO CHARGES FOR CARRY-ON BAGS TOO!  UM – WE ARE TRAVELING FAR ENOUGH TO HAVE TO FLY INSTEAD OF DRIVE AND YOU DON’T THINK WE ARE GOING TO HAVE A BAG OR TWO?  IF WE DON’T TAKE A SHOWER OR CHANGE OUR CLOTHES THE WHOLE TIME WE ARE ON VACATION BECAUSE WE DIDN’T WANT TO DEAL WITH ALL YOUR RETARDED FEES THEN I SUPPOSE YOU WILL DENY US BOARDING YOUR AIRCRAFT TOO?

New and Inconvenient Commercial Flight Rules

After the Christmas Day scare the commercial airlines, commercial airport terminals and the TSA wasted no time in imposing new rules, procedures and protocols.  Almost all of them are guaranteed to make your next trip to a commercial airport and your next commercial flight experience even worse than you’ve already experienced but did you know that most technology being used at commercial airport security screening checkpoints is not able to recognize PETN or other chemical explosives.  What’s even worse is after Richard Reid’s incident with the attempted shoe bombing, we were all then required to take off our shoes and put them on the conveyor belt. Sounds good, except we’ve already concluded that most of those machines can’t recognize chemical explosives.

Here’s a little more information:

For all U.S.-bound aircraft originating in a foreign country (this also includes Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands):

  • Passengers will not be able to leave their seat approximately one hour prior to landing (this includes trips to the restroom).
  • There will be no PA announcements regarding the position of the aircraft or landing announcements.
  • You will be allowed only one carry-on item and you cannot access it during the one-hour period prior to landing. This also includes magazines, newspapers, books and personal electronic devices.
  • All pillows and blankets will be collected one hour prior to landing. Flight crews are being told to stow the blankets and pillows in the galleys and not in the overhead compartments.
  • All on board in-flight entertainment systems will be disabled (these are the systems that usually show the electronic map on the screens and the aircraft position).

It’s Almost Christmas!

I think we’ve all been slightly overwhelmed with all the holiday activities; myself included.  I’ve, once again, slacked a little on by blog writing.  I have been working extremely diligently on my marketing efforts after speaking with one of my favorite clients.  He handles all of the private jet charter for a top-notch NBA team. About a year ago this gentleman put together a list of preferred vendors.  I was flattered to be on his short list of only seven from around the world.  That list was put together in August of 2008.  Here it is – December of 2009 and he shared with me that only three of the seven preferred vendors on his list for aircraft charter still exist.  That news was both heart wrenching and exciting.  It is impossible for any decent human being to not feel for the many companies in my industry who have both suffered a loss and who have suffered the ultimate loss (losing their business) but yet there is still that selfish side who hopes that as the economy continues to be repaired that, with less competition, it will allow Exquisite Air Charter to continue to grow.

Exquisite Air Charter has experienced a record year while so many others have failed.  It is difficult to come up with an answer when I ask myself why?  I think that a low overhead and not living above our means has been a blessing.  I also think that it is a blessing from God, as Exquisite Air Charter was truly founded on the highest principles.  After working in private jet charter industry for so long, there were so many disappointing practices that I saw and had no control over.  I wanted Exquisite Air Charter to be different… AND IT IS!  I didn’t want to  steal other people’s clients; I didn’t want to compromise our client’s safety just to get the trip.  I’ve had many of clients come back to me and tell me that another company was offering a lower price and when that happens and the client is willing to disclose to me some information about the aircraft and/or company operating the aircraft, it is almost always certain that the company with the CHEAPER price also has a CHEAPER reputation – usually accidents or incidents and/or the crew has very low hours of experience flying.  The client is more than welcome to take that CHEAPER flight but Exquisite Air Charter will most certainly pass up the business instead of having our clients’ safety (or lack thereof) on our conscience.  We want to change the way people fly – only on the most airworthy aircraft which are crewed by the most experienced crew members and we want to create an organization of lasting value.  So far, we couldn’t be on a better path.

Private Jet Usage Benefits

Private jet usage seems to be getting a bad reputation with all of the auto bailout news.  Exquisite Air Charter is a private jet charter agent and has a significant amount of bias on the subject; however, the benefits of utilizing these luxury private planes is obvious.  There is no denying that flying by private jet to the bailout hearings is simply ridiculous; especially considering the hearings were held in Washington D.C. and there are plenty of commercial flights in and out of such a large airport on a daily basis but when on an extremely tight schedule, and/or needing to get to a more rural area, private jet charter is the most cost effective (especially considering that time is money) option.

The ability to travel from meeting to meeting efficiently and with a tight schedule, while holding high-level meetings en-route, and minimizing lost productivity while away from the office is precisely why large corporations utilize private jets; why President Obama utilizes his own private jet – Air Force One.  As taxpayers, who foot the cost for Air Force One, we know that it provides speed, security and safety, to the most important American during a time in our lives when our economy requires President Obama to be on the move.   While the media seems to enjoy proclaiming private jet usage as the ultimate in wasteful spending, it is often more cost effective to charter a private jet than to fly commercially.  When all factors are taken into account – lost productivity, lodging, meals, etc… – the private jet becomes a true business tool. Unfortunately, the media isn’t interested in that, the close detailed comparison would take too long to report about… it is much easier to join the efforts of bad-mouthing such a valuable industry.

The economic impact that private aviation has on the US economy is an important consideration as well. Billions of dollars of lost revenue, taxes and jobs would damage the economy more than it is already damaged if we don’t stop this nonsense that the media is putting into our heads.  A more careful approach is needed in determining the correct usage of private jets, but I also maintain that stopping use of private aviation altogether will ultimately hinder the recovery process of our economy.
